THE RACE ELEMENTS

TRAIL RUNNING/HIKING
The run course will follow the Little Horse Mesa Loop Trail in Sugarite Canyon State Park and consists primarily of single-track trails with some dual-track trail and pavement/road.  Approximate Distance:  6 miles/10km (PDF Hiking/Trail Run Route Map)

PADDLING
In a self propelled (paddled by hand, i.e. kayak/canoe) water craft furnished by the participant(s) a course will be paddled on Lake Maloya.  Participants will depart from the south boat ramp and follow the numbered buoys.  Each buoy must be rounded by the watercraft, with the watercraft going around the buoys so that the watercraft is between the buoys and the shore. Approximate Distance: 3 miles

BIKING
Participant will provide his/her own non-motorized bicycle.

Participants will start the bike portion at the south boat ramp of Lake Maloya in Sugarite Canyon State Park and ride on County Road 85.5 into Trinidad, Colorado.  The entire course is on a dirt road. Approximate distance:  15 miles

SHOOTING
The day of the race should not be the first time you use a gun.  Please train and familiarize yourself with the gun you are using far in advance of the race.  This is a safety issue for yourself, our range masters, and other competitors.  At the range master's discretion, anyone deemed unsafe will be disqualified.

This year the shoot will be held at the Trinidad State College Prator Gun Range located off of Las Animas County Road 24.3.  This is where the biking portion of the event will end.  We are working out exactly what the shoot will look like and how it will be scored, but it will not be like it has been in years past. Final information on the shoot will be provided at the Mandatory Pre-race meeting next Friday.  See Race Maps for approximate set up.

Details TBD; in the past it has been run this way:

Only 12 and 20 gauge shotguns are permitted to be used on the course.

To speed things up we run two courses.  The courses will be identical.  Depending on your arrival at the finish area you will be assigned either course A or course B.  The course assignments will be final.  Please do not ask to trade your shooting course.

The shooting portion will be comprised of different shooting stations where a competitor will engage steel and clay targets. The competitors will move through each station engaging each target as they go.  Targets at each station may include thrown clays, stationary clays, and metal targets.

In compliance with conventional shooting competitions rules, ammunition will NOT be provided.  Each participant will need to provide their own ammunition and a means to carry it on the course (carrying ammunition in the cargo pockets, etc. of clothing is allowed).
Competitors will need 40-50 rounds and will be required to carry it all personally.  Ammo must be bird shot target loads of 1300 feet/second or less.

You will have a time limit to complete the course.  Penalties TBA.  The shooter's briefing will take place at the pre-race meeting.  All participants and team shooters must be present for the briefing. There will be no briefing the day of the race or at the start line. A shooter will be expected to present themselves at the starting line of the shooting component ready to shoot.  There will not be an opportunity to walk the course before you run it.

Participants transitioning from the bike to the shooting area will have 15min  from finishing the biking portion before they must check in at the shooting staging area (this does not necessarily mean they will have to shoot at that time but they must check in). Failure to report with the 15 min will result in a time penalty assessed during the shooting portion of the event. With the exception of team shooters,  Shooters will shoot in the order they finish the biking portion.

Shooters in 4 person teams and teams where the shooter isn't doing another component of the event are to report to the shooting range at 8am on race day.

Rules are subject to change as the course is developed and the number of shooters changes.
